What winning the searches CarGurus nearly owns is worth, in Google and AI

CarGurus has the most organic search visits of any US car site, and still buys a quarter of its visits in Google Ads at a rising $0.91 each. 7,570 model searches sit at #4–6, "used cars" ranks #6, and research sites take twice CarGurus' share of visits from AI assistants. Pick a tier, then replace our assumptions with CarGurus' own.

Tiers 1–3: near-miss pages, a "used cars" hub, car-value pages, enthusiast pages and AI answers
7,570 model and trim searches of 1,000+ a month rank #4–6 on Google (39.3M searches, 92% under an AI Overview). Today they earn ~533k clicks a month; all of them at #2 would earn ~1.54M. Click rates are Similarweb estimates for cargurus.com (non-branded, Jun–Aug 2026): 3.6% at #2 vs 1.0–1.6% at #4–6 under an AI Overview.
#2
#2 in the default; #1 only in the ceiling. Applies to the near-miss searches, the "used cars" terms and the car-value terms. Similarweb's estimated click rate for cargurus.com at #1 is 6.5% under an AI Overview (12.5% without).
On
Nine category searches (369k for "used cars" alone, now #6) and fifteen valuation searches ("car value", "sell my car", "what is my car worth"). CarGurus buys 84% of its "used cars" clicks today.

33%

What a visit is worth
$0.83
$0.83 = US revenue ÷ US sessions, Q2 2026 (10-Q: $226.3M ÷ 90.8M × 3). CarGurus pays $0.85 per paid visit (Similarweb, Jun–Aug), so it already values a marginal visit near this. Range: $0.39 (Ahrefs traffic value per visit) to $1.36 (US revenue ÷ Similarweb web visits). Placeholder until CarGurus shares what an extra session earns.
Paid spend re-aimed (cash, never added to revenue)

About 994k paid clicks a month on "cargurus", "car gurus", "carguru" and "car guru", ~$777k at Similarweb's CPCs, on searches CarGurus ranks #1 for. A 4–6 week holdout in matched markets decides the real share.

About 597k paid clicks a month (~$462k) on searches where CarGurus already ranks top 3 organically, e.g. "cybertruck for sale", "audi r8 for sale".

What doing nothing costs

Every month the plan waits defers about $350K of marketplace revenue. Paid search is getting dearer: cost per visit rose 17% from June to August 2026 ($0.78 to $0.91), about $2.0M a month more for August's 15.1M paid visits. Referring domains fell 16% in a year (60,906 to 51,037), and Google AI Overviews sit on 78% of CarGurus' top-6 rankings, so holding a position earns fewer clicks each year. Pages take 3–6 months to rank: work started now lands before the February–April 2027 tax-refund season (in 2026, March visits jumped 17% on February).

Traffic: Similarweb, United States, pulled 2 Oct 2026: Marketing Channels (Sep 2025–Aug 2026), Website Keywords (Jun–Aug 2026, clicks ÷ 3 for monthly), Rank Distribution (Aug 2026, positions 1–6), Organic Landing Pages (Aug 2026), Search Performance Over Time (modelled Google Ads spend $11.4M, $13.2M and $13.7M in Jun, Jul and Aug), Traffic Sources and nine-site compares. Rankings history, AI citations and traffic value: Ahrefs, 30 Sep 2026 (organic 13.96M a month, about two-thirds of Similarweb's 21.5M; the two aren't blended). Economics: CarGurus Q2 2026 Form 10-Q and results release (US revenue $226.3M; US average monthly sessions 90.8M).
Formula: near-miss visits = share moved × Σ searches × (click rate at the target rank − click rate today), over the 7,570 searches at #4–6; "used cars" and car-value visits = Σ max(0, searches × click rate at the target rank − today's organic clicks); enthusiast = lift × 587k; AI = share of the gap closed × 341k. Revenue a year = total visits × revenue per visit × 12. Paid spend re-aimed = (brand cut × $777k + overlap cut × $462k) × 12, cash that is never added to revenue. Paid equivalent is what the visits would cost in Google Ads, not what they earn. Every revenue figure uses our assumptions until CarGurus shares its own.
